This Weeks Game of Thrones Has Leaked Online But Its Not From

First, a cyber attack led to an alleged script or script treatment being put online, along with episodes from a couple HBO series, as reported earlier this week. After releasing episodes of Ballers and Room 104, the hackers claimed to have 1.5 terabytes of HBO’s data and threatened to release more. While that doesn’t appear to have happened yet, HBO now has another leak to deal with. This Sunday’s episode of Game of Thrones has leaked online, available to anyone who doesn’t have a problem with piracy. Or low quality. This isn’t an HD broadcast-ready rip of the episode. It’s a low-definition screener sent out to a broadcast partner with a “for internal viewing only watermark” on it. Deadline reports that watermark allowed HBO to determine the source of the leak. That particular copy was sent to an Indian distributor called Star. Somehow, it ended up in a Google Drive posting in a Reddit thread. However it got there, someone at Star is in trouble. The hackers from earlier this week have not yet released any episodes of Game of Thrones, though they did put out either a script or script treatment from Sunday’s “The Spoils of War.” HBO has not confirmed any specifics regarding what content has been stolen, but the hacker group called their attack “the greatest leak of cyber space era,” and claimed that “HBO is falling.” Whatever that means. Not having watched the leaked episode, I have to question why anyone would want to. As much as we all want to know what happens as the fantasy hit draws toward its final season, Game of Thrones is ultimately about spectacle. Yes, the characters give us reason to care about the spectacle, but do you really want to watch a massive battle at a tiny resolution? Can you even tell what’s going on at that point? But hey, sometimes with piracy, the point is to have the thing, not necessarily to enjoy it.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.last_img
