Rayudu (90), Hardik (45); Henry (4/35), Boult (3/39). (Full Scorecard)Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said he enjoyed watching Hardik Pandya’s late blitz in the ongoing fifth ODI vs New Zealand at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington on Sunday.Gavaskar said Hardik Pandya’s cameo (a 22-ball 45) has boosted the morale of the Indian team, which was reeling at 18/4, days after being bowled out for their lowest-ever total (92) in Hamilton in the third ODI.Pandya had walked into bat at a better situation as Ambati Rayudu (90) and Vijay Shankar (45) had stabilised the team with a 98-run stand for the fifth wicket. After the latter’s dismissal, Rayudu added 74 runs for the sixth wicket with Kedar Jadhav (34).Pandya took it upon himself after Jadhav’s dismissal and launched a fierce onslaught. He smashed leg-spinner Todd Astle for three consecutive sixes in the 47th over and helped push India past the 250-run mark. A pull over the mid-wicket boundary off Trent Boult and a scoop against a Matt Henry yorker were, as Gavaskar points out, delightful.”There was no desperate hitting today at all. It was a calculated assault. It was magnificent to watch, it was delightful to watch. He [Hardik], with those hits, apart from the runs that have been added also lifts the mood in the dressing room. He has got those 40-50 extra runs,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.5th ODI: India vs New Zealand live score and updatesStressing Hardik can be promoted to bat higher up the order, the batting great added: “Yes, this is exactly what the Indian team wants from him. That is the reason, he was held back and Vijay Shankar and Kedar Jadhav were sent ahead. But sometimes, why not give him a few more overs?advertisement”Instead of the last 10 overs, if he gets to bat may 15 overs, those extra five overs could mean another 25 or even 45 runs.”Innings Break!A 22 ball 45 run cameo from @hardikpandya7 propels #TeamIndia to a total of 252 runs. The Baroda all-rounder had picked up two wickets and took a stunning catch to dismiss Kane Williamson in the third ODI in Mount Maunganui last week.Rayudu unlucky to miss out on hundred: GavaskarMeanwhile, Gavaskar also pointed out that Ambati Rayudu has learnt from his mistake from the 4th ODI in Hamilton. Rayudu was dismissed for naught after he tried to counter-attack when his team was in trouble in Hamilton. The lack of fight from the middle-order after a rare failure from the top-order saw India getting bowled out for 92.However, Rayudu didn’t panic even as he consumed quite a lot of dot balls towards the start of his innings. The Andhra Pradesh batsman paced his innings well and finished with 90 from 113 balls.”There were questions being asked after he got out in the previous game [Hamilton]. The situation was similar and he had looked to play the aggressive game and got out. He has learnt from that,” Gavaskar said.He added: “Today the first 20 deliveries, he scored only one run and then another 11 odd runs in the next 20 deliveries because that was the time the New Zealand bowling was at its top.”When the innings started to stabilise, he opened his shoulders and upped the ante. Unlucky to have missed out on the hundred.”Also Read | Holder dedicates West Indies 10-wicket win over England to Joseph’s late motherAlso Read | I am almost back to 100 per cent, says Ravichandran AshwinAlso See:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
