Youth Olympics: Manu Bhaker bags silver, men’s and women’s hockey teams advance

first_imgManu Bhaker bagged a silver medal after her gold medal finish in 10m air pistol event becoming only the second India after judoka Tababi Devi Thangjam to win two medals at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires.On the other hand, Indian men’s hockey team defeated Poland 4-2 in Hockey 5s to advance to the semi-finals while the women’s team reached the quarter-finals with a 5-2 win over South Africa.Bhaker, in a unique format, teamed up with Tajikistan’s Behzan Fayzullaev for the 10m air pistol mixed international event where they settled for silver after a 3-10 loss to Germany’s Vanessa Seeger and Bulgaria’s Kiril Kirov in the gold medal match.The pair of Bhaker and Fayzullaev had scored 751 to come through the qualification process and then beat an Egyptian-Thai pair 10-4 in the Round of 16.Also read – Manu Bhaker becomes first Indian shooter to win gold at Youth OlympicsThey beat a pair from Lithuania and Moldova 10-8 in the quarterfinals and then overcame Andria Ibarra of Mexico and Dymtro Honta of Ukraine 10-3 in the semifinals.The German-Bulgarian pair, however, started strong in the finals and was 3-0 ahead at one stage before winning 10-3 to emerge champions.According to the format, the gold medal winner of the individual event is paired with the athlete who finished 20th in the final.India thus wrapped up their shooting campaign with two gold and three silver medals. Of the eight medals won by the Indian contingent so far, five are from shooting.
