Res. 1A strong Letterkenny Rovers team overcame a youthful Drumkeen Utd on the opening day of the reserve League season at Leckview Park on Saturday afternoon in a game which saw the visitors finish the game with 9 men following a double sending off on the hour mark.Following early efforts by Peter McNamee and Jerome Duffy for the visitors it was Rovers who almost went ahead on 7 minutes. Kevin McGrath with some good work on the right set up Stephen O’Donnell and his thunderous shot hit the post much to the relief of Michael Gibson in the Drumkeen goal. The relief was short-lived though as O’Donnell secured the opening goal on 13 minutes. The always lively Stevie Okakpo played the big Manor man through on goal and his low shot easily beat Gibson to put Rovers ahead.Further efforts by O’Donnell and the returning Christopher Malseed followed before Drumkeen got a deserved equaliser in a wonderful counter attacking move..Letterkenny lost possession on the edge of the visitors box which fell to Kevin Bonner. His angled pass led to Peter McNamee nicely beating the offside trap before rounding the advancing Letterkenny net minder Jason Quinn outside his own box and coolly finishing to the bottom corner. Indeed McNamee was a thorn in the side of Jonathan Minnock and John Doherty in the first half and had a couple of other chances to put the visitors ahead shooting narrowly over on a couple of occasions.Rovers dominated possession though for most of the half and had a great chance on 42 through a super pass and move between Okakpo and Neil Lloyd which led to Okakpo just missing the target from 12 yards. Rovers domination was emphasised when they took the lead right on the stroke of halftime. After man of the match Okakpo had a rasper of a shot cannon off the bar the rebound fell to Kevin McGrath on the right. He played O’Donnell through and his cross was headed home by Darren McElwaine to ensure the hosts held an interval lead. The second half started in much the same vein with excellent chances spurned by O’Donnell and McGrath before the games big talking point on 61 minutes. An incisive pass through by McGrath found Stephen O’Donnell he played the ball across the edge of the 6 yard box to McElwaine who scored with the Drumkeen defence shouting offside from the initial pass. While Rovers were celebrating the goal ref Stephen Toner brandished a red card to dismiss Chris Kyle for dissent. Lee Guthrie then showed dissent and was also sent off to reduce the visitors to 9 men. From then on it was only a matter of playing out the game and numerous chances came and went for Rovers with Okakpo and O’Hagan both having efforts narrowly wide before Rovers scored their 4th goal on 76 minutes. Gibson did well to save Okakpo’s shot but could only parry it into the path of Glenn Gallagher and he made no mistake keeping his composure to coolly slot home from 12 yards. Drumkeen had a couple of half chances through Lee Kennedy and Kevin Bonner to reduce the deficit while Letterkenny substitute Gareth Doherty had a couple of chances which flew narrowly wide. It was always going to be a tough battle for the young Drumkeen team against a very strong Letterkenny side but they battled hard especially when reduced to 9 men.Letterkenny Rovers; Jason Quinn, Glenn Gallagher, Neil Lloyd, Jonathan Minnock, John Doherty, Aaron O’Hagan, Kevin McGrath, Christopher Malseed, Darren McElwaine, Stephen O’Donnell, Stevie Okakpo.
