Inside Conditions…Too little, too late

first_imgAubrey BruceNBC’s weather guru otherwise known as Al “the tornado” Roker has one of the best Sunday night promos for the NFL’s great post Christian Sabbath meal game.  Roker bellows in his baritone voice; “it’s  Sunday” and the phrase continues to somewhere out into the stratosphere unknown thanks to the National Broadcasting Companies expert audio team.Last Sunday night at least as far as the weather goes the city of  Pittsburgh turned into “Siberia junior.” I “plied” my trade from the confines of the press box and heck it was even cold up there.  I cannot even remotely begin to imagine for whatever reason aside from being a player making mega millions that I would spend sixty minutes hanging around on the frozen “tundra” of any gridiron located in one of the NFL’s dome less stadiums situated in the American Northeast or Midwest area.As we all know every Steelers game is sold out even if all of the paid public does not show up.All of the fans might not have shown up Sunday night but “betcha by golly wow” the Pittsburgh Steelers swaggered through and confirmed a few things for this writer along the way.First and foremost, there is nothing, nada, zilch, zero, zip, nil with the Steelers offense or defense.  When Ben Roethlisberger does not turn the ball over “trying” to make a splash play downfield and takes what the opposing defense give him and when then the Steelers defense plays and executes the defense that they are instructed to play, the Pittsburgh squad represents a formidable opponent for any of the 31 other NFL teams. No matter what their won, loss record may indicate the Pittsburgh Steelers can beat any team on any given Sunday. However, these “excellent performances” may be “too little, too late.”When Pittsburgh’s offense sticks to the game plan of the Steelers Offensive Coordinator Todd Haley regarding a decent 3.0-3.5 per carry average running game along with a 10-15 yard average per pass that play selection will cause most NFL defenses to leave the playing field with their heads bowed after the game ending gun sounds. Also, when the Steelers defense keeps any offense “in front of them” and imitates the average “chiropractor” on opposing wide receivers when they do catch the ball, well let’s put it this way; “The Nutcracker Suite” might not be so sweet for opposing NFL Offensive Coordinators. But there are still a few “warts” that have to be removed from the Steelers offensive and defensive performances. In more than one game during the 2013 season the defense against the run was less than stellar. Pittsburgh did put the brakes on the Bengals nasty running game.Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin made mention the that “small fact.”“We were ahead, so they were throwing the ball a lot. I wouldn’t necessarily say we solved any run issues if we have them. It’s just the nature of the game. They had to throw the ball a lot in the second half. They were down by multiple scores.”Tomlin also made mention that the overall performance was far from perfect by pointing out that the Steelers missed out on more than a few chances to put the game out of reach by having to settle for a few field goals as opposed to scoring touchdowns. When he was asked about the missed offensive scoring opportunities he said; “Certainly we did. We kicked three field goals. I’m glad we’ve got Shaun Suisham. We don’t want to utilize him that much unless it’s extra points.” three touchdowns as opposed to three field goals ups the “ante” from 9 points to 21 points.  Instead of a 10 point win for Pittsburgh it could have been a 21 point win and although the Steelers have a slim, slim, very slim chance of reaching the 2013 postseason, what if something mundane like points for and points against happened to be the difference from playing in February 2014 or playing “couch potato.”The Pittsburgh Steelers are a bit “long in the tooth” on defense as far as the principals in the secondary but the defense is retooling and seems to have a promising future. Pittsburgh definitely has one of the younger offenses in the league if you remove quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, tight end Heath Miller and wide receiver Jericho Cotchery from the mix but ya know what?  With the weapons that they have on offense and with the offensive philosophy of their O.C. Todd Haley they should be primed and “ready for Bear.”However, from the quarterback down to the offensive line, patience is the key.  My grandpap used to say in a very loud and forceful voice from the pulpit  when someone was crying out in prayer for that new house or new car. “Sometimes the prayers of the “greedy” end up becoming the prayers of the “needy.”There were many occasions on which the Pittsburgh Steelers should have settled for eight small plays but the offense could not be satisfied unless they were able to complete one or two “big splash” plays. Also, the defense is far from blameless as well. How many times have you seen the Steelers safeties peeking into the backfield of opposing offenses reacting to a totally bogus play action, “sleight of handoff”  by the quarterback only to be beaten badly over the top. There is no acceptable excuse for the Steelers not preparing to enter the post season but ya know what boys’ and girls’?  The chickens have not only come home to roost they have pooped on all of the cars that the owner thought were safely under the “big tree.”Get it out of your heads now, Steelers nation. Many players of the Black and Gold are auditioning for a roster spot in 2014 because let’s face it. As far as 2103 is concerned it’s a wrap.Aubrey Bruce can be reached at: [email protected] or 412.583.6741last_img read more

Whitewater gets set for early opening

first_imgBy Timothy Schafer, The Nelson DailyFor those looking to get first tracks (legally) at Whitewater, mark this date on your calendar: Dec. 4.The first weekend in December is expected to usher in a new season in paradise as Whitewater Ski Resort will deliver over 600 acres of new skiing, three new top-to-bottom intermediate runs, and the Glory Ridge chair lift (2,044 vertical feet), said the hill’s general manager, Brian Cusack. Although initial predictions were for the third week of November, warmer temperatures haven’t brought the snow they should have, he said. Even still, there hasn’t been a damper put on the start of the season, which will still start one week before it historically has. “The long-term forecast is for a snowy, cooler winter with lots of storms, so I think we are looking for a remarkable season,” Cusack said. The new lift will open by the 16th of December, with the final pieces of the lift and testing still yet to be completed this month. The galvanized metal triple lift was brought in from Vail, Col., at “a steal” of a price. The Mountain opens fulltime on Dec. 11. Last year, thanks to a huge dump of snow in the middle of November, Whitewater opened in the third week of November. Over 50 centimetres of snow have fallen on the top of the mountains at Whitewater, with around 20 cm. accumulating at the base. Ski hills across the province are gearing up for an early season opening this month, with many hoping a La Nina weather cycle will bring record snows this year. It is not yet clear how this year’s cooler La Nina pattern will affect the ski season. In 2009, the warmer El Nino weather pattern led to mid November openings. Sun Peaks, located north of Kamloops, is expected to open on Nov. 20 while Silver Star plans to open its Nordic ski tracks on Nov. 18 and the downhill area on Nov. 26. Blackcomb’s official opening day is still set for Nov. 25, and Whistler is pegged for this Friday, but with freezing level at 1,200 metres and 68 centimetres of snow already on the slopes, Blackcomb could potentially open earlier. In areas with heavy snowfall, changes are in the works. Backcountry skiers heading to Revelstoke’s Glacier National Park will find anyone entering a prohibited area or a winter restricted area that is closed could be hit with fines of $2,000. For information on the Winter Permit System call 250-837-7500 or check out www.parkscanada.gc.ca/[email protected] Note The second annual Avalanche Awareness Beyond the Boundaries Society (AABBS) gear swap is coming up on Sunday, Nov. 21 at the Gravity Adventure Climbing Gym located at 513 Victoria St. This is a swap for all gear: hiking, biking, back country, kayak, canoes. The best part about your purchase is 20 per cent of the proceeds will go to the AABBS.AABBS is a non-for-profit society founded in the spring of 2009 by a group of Nelson ski industry and business professionals concerned about the increase in the number of teens venturing out into the back country without any avalanche and mountain safety training.   Thanks to the generosity of the many donors that have supported the effort, the society provided free Canadian Avalanche Association approved Avalanche Skills Training courses to 30 Nelson and area youth between the ages of 13-18 this past ski season.   Whitewater has also provided five, one-day Avalanche Awareness Courses for approximately 75 youth aimed to raise awareness and prepare these youth for the AST 1 courses. If you would like to know more about this program for youth, or would like to find out how you can help, check out http://www.skiwhitewater.com/beyond_the_boundaries.php.Registration is on a first come, first served basis.last_img read more

Considering the circumstances, Leafs off to a great start

first_imgLike most KIJHL clubs, rosters are far from set — Leafs included. The late start by the BC Hockey League only exacerbated the situation as late cuts have only begun to trickle down the Junior B pipeline. For McLellan & Company, that has led to plenty of pieces still remaining to fill out the Leaf player puzzle.“I’m trying to find the piece I’d like to add,” McLellan confessed when asked about the remainder of the roster.“We’re pretty happy where we’re at now but it would be good to find a top six forward and that’s sort of our focus right now. And if it requires a trade to do that, we’ll do it.”The Leafs reaped some early rewards when McLellan was able to snag former Nelson goalie Brett Soles. The Cranbrook native, who played two seasons ago for Nelson, toiled with Notre Dame Hounds of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.Soles, 19, played 15 games for the Hounds last season, finishing with a 6-8-1 record, and gives Nelson a one-two combo between the pipes with Adam Maida.Another piece McLellan was able to add was 16-year-old protégé Cody Paivarinta via the Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League.Paivarinta, whose uncle Henry is a retired Deputy Chief with Nelson Police Department, comes to Leafs compliments of former Nelson native and now coach and GM of the Raiders Bruno Campese.“The goal is to develop Cody into a player who can compete at the Western Hockey League level and he’s shown really good signs already here with us,” McLellan said. It’s not the best-case scenario — playing six home games in September to start the season — but those are the cards Dave McLellan and the Nelson Leafs have been dealt. And the way the team has responded thus far this Kootenay International Junior Hockey League season, who’s going to bet against them.Nelson begins week two of the KIJHL campaign Friday in Beaver Valley against the defending league champs bolstered by a three-point weekend at home on opening weekend. However, after Friday’s tilt in Fruitvale, Nelson plays four more games at the NDCC Arena, beginning Saturday against the always-tough Kamloops Storm.“Sure it puts a bit of pressure on us, but it also, if we do well at home here, it’s going to make (NDCC Arena) a tough place to play if you’re the opposing team coming into our arena,” McLellan explained.“We’re going build our team around our arena,” he added. “This is a great facility, there’s a great sheet of ice and we want to have a team that can skate and make plays on it as well.”Nelson opened the season with a tie against the Nitehawks before exploding for three goals in the third period to erase a lead and dump rival Castlegar 5-3 Saturday.“We want to make this place a tough place to play, and hopefully we have a good month at home, that would really do us well to help us get off to a good start,” McLellan said.last_img read more

Safety study for dangerous corner following accident

first_imgNew safety measures are being sought for a dangerous bend in Glenswilly following a recent accident. Concerns were raised about the narrow corner from Tullyhullion to Kilpheak after a car struck a wall while trying to avoid another vehicle.Cllr Glackin told the Letterkenny Municipal District that the accident highlighted legitimate concerns surrounding this section of road leading towards St Columba’s Church. He said: “There is no room for two cars to pass here and this is leading to evasive action.“This happened where two cars met and one car pulled in and hit a wall. It was lucky on this occasion that there was nobody hurt.”Cllr Glackin said legitimate concerns have been raised locally as the road is used often by people out walking and jogging. He added that he believed the issue could be a quick fix with safety signage. The Letterkenny Roads Department confirmed that a Safety Engineer will be asked to assess the location to find out if it may be eligible for low cost accident funding. Area Manager Fergal Doherty said that signage options will be explored if the corner is deemed unlikely to be eligible for funding. 2010npc

first_imgThe right to host the 2010 World Cup brings South Africa a unique opportunity that extends well beyond football. One of the biggest impacts from hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup will come from the phenomenal marketing and communication opportunity it will offer the country and continent. As world attention focuses on the first African World Cup this is an opportunity for Africans to tell their own stories. The 2010 National Communication Partnership is a joint effort of communicators across society and in the many creative and communication disciplines to take advantage of this communication opportunity of a lifetime to benefit our country and continent. History of the Partnership The 2010 National Communications Partnership had its genesis in a meeting in early 2006, convened by GCIS and the Brand South Africa and hosted by the Minister in the Presidency, of senior government communicators and a group of private sector corporate communicators. The latter expressed their commitment to taking advantage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup communication opportunity for the benefit of the country and continent. They identified the need for some facility to ensure a well co-ordinated marketing and communication campaign in the build-up to 2010 to maximise tourism and foreign investment opportunities for many years beyond 2010, as well as to mobilise South Africans across sectors as hosts, and to build national pride.Such a facility would help ensure that all left hands were aware of what right hands were doing, facilitate the development of an overarching strategic vision for communicators across sectors and disciplines so everyone worked together to take advantage of this communication opportunity of a lifetime for our country and continent. As a result the 2010 National Communications Partnership (NCP) was formed. Its plenary membership now stands at around 250 leaders of communication across sectors and disciplines – marketing, advertising, communication, public relations, creative industries, tourism in the public and private sectors. The work of the Partnership is driven by a task team representative of the various disciplines and sectors, which meets monthly.last_img read more

Navjot Singh Sidhu, Amarinder Singh spat may hurt Congress in Punjab

first_imgThe intensifying tussle between Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and his cabinet colleague Navjot Singh Sidhu threatens to hurt the Congress party’s image in one of the few States where it performed well in the last Lok Sabha elections, according to political analysts. Mr. Sidhu is yet to take charge of his new allotted Power ministry after being divested of the key Local Government ministry and analysts said the former cricketer was unlikely to take the change in portfolio lying down. “Congress is already riddled with factionalism in many States; the ongoing spat between the two leaders in Punjab is not a good sign for the party,” said Mohammed Khalid, Professor of Political Science at Panjab University. “Congress is going through a tough situation at the national level and such episodes [the internal tussle] will only make the revival of the party very difficult,” he added. Capt. Amarinder had on Thursday divested Mr. Sidhu of the Local Government and Tourism and Cultural Affairs departments and allocated the Power and New and Renewable Energy Sources portfolios. However, barring four ministers, the Chief Minister had made some changes to the portfolios of all the other ministers. The two leaders have been at loggerheads since the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls. Capt. Amarinder had hit out at Mr. Sidhu after the results, asserting that “Sidhu’s damaging remarks ahead of polling” might have affected the party’s performance in the Bathinda parliamentary constituency, where the Congress candidate lost to the Shiromani Akali Dal’s Harsimrat Kaur Badal. The veteran Congress leader had also blamed his junior cabinet colleague for not handling his department well, which he claimed had resulted in the Congress’s “poor performance” in the urban areas in the elections. Mr. Sidhu had retorted by asserting that he was being “singled out publicly” even though urban areas had played a critical role in the party’s victory in the Lok Sabha polls.“Amarinder Singh has emerged as a strong leader after the Lok Sabha polls,” said Ashutosh Kumar, Professor of Political Science at Panjab University. “But on the other hand Sidhu may also not back down. At this time party’s central leadership needs to come into play. If the spat continues it will eventually weaken the party,” Prof. Kumar remarked.Ronki Ram, Dean at the Department of Social Science at Panjab University, said a public spat was bad for the party’s future prospects. “Punjab was the only State where the Congress had a face saving performance in the Lok Sabha polls and there’s no doubt that Capt. Amarinder led from the front,” observed Prof. Ram. “Mr. Sidhu needs to understand that attacking one leader does not mean that you can establish your hold on the party. Respect in the party has to be cultivated and it may take years. If differences are not brushed aside the party will surely suffer.”last_img read more

Sergio Aguero ties club scoring record as Manchester City consolidate top spot

first_imgManchester City took a five-point lead in the English Premier League with a 3-0 win against Burnley on Saturday and Sergio Aguero became the club’s joint top goal-scorer.The Argentina striker started the game one behind Eric Brook’s record of 177 which has stood for 78 years. After nine rounds, City has 25 points – five more than rival Manchester United which lost at Huddersfield 2-1.Aguero, back in the starting lineup after breaking a rib in a car crash three weeks ago, converted a penalty kick in the 30th minute at Etihad Stadium. When you’re five points clear at the ??? of the @premierleague. pic.twitter.com/IbzDQoSuqo- Manchester City (@ManCity) October 21, 2017That brought him level with Brook, who scored his goals for City from 1927-39.Aguero has made 262 appearances for City in all competitions to reach the record mark, compared to Brook’s 493.Aguero has 129 Premier League goals, third highest among active players – behind Wayne Rooney (201) and Jermain Defoe (159).Nicolas Otamendi and Leroy Sane added second-half goals for City against hard-working Burnley.Aguero had a controversial penalty to thank as City reached a club record-equaling 11th successive win in all competitions, despite Burnley proving tough opponents amid torrential rain for Pep Guardiola’s free-flowing side. But Aguero will have to wait to claim the record outright after being substituted in the 76th minute.5 points clear at the ??? of the table ????? Bernardo Silva should have opened the scoring after Sane skipped around a challenge and pulled the ball back but the Portuguese shot straight at Nick Pope.Controversy erupted after Pope reacted quickly to deny Kevin De Bruyne the chance to shoot. The ball ran free and Pope was adjudged to have brought down Bernardo Silva in the rush to regain possession.Well done guys ! 3 important points ????? this is the way??????#mancity #manchestercity pic.twitter.com/bGSLewNlTG- Nicolas Otamendi (@Notamendi30) October 21, 2017Burnley contested that Silva had made the most of any contact and there was some arguing and shoving among players.Aguero remained calm throughout the confusion and, having missed from the spot on his last appearance, made no mistake to put City ahead and equal the record.City continued to dominate after the break, and the second goal eventually came after 73 minutes as Otamendi got forward for a corner and met Sane’s cross with a powerful header.Moments later the points were wrapped up as De Bruyne picked out Sane with a characteristic defense-splitting through-ball. The German raced into the area and lashed a low shot past Pope.last_img read more
