Both figures represented year-over-year increases up from $6.8 billion and $162.4 billion, respectively.”We delivered strong results for Radian in the first quarter, driven primarily by outstanding credit trends in our mortgage insurance business,” Radian CEO S.A. Ibrahim said. “The last 12 months have been a turning point for Radian, as we’ve eliminated a significant portion of our legacy risk and therefore simplified our company with a focus on our core strengths. Today, we are better positioned to drive long-term value, both from our large and growing mortgage insurance portfolio and by broadening our future sources of revenue through our new mortgage and real estate services businesses.”Refinance activity spiked by 15 percentage points year-over-year in Q1, comprising 33 percent of NIW – compared to 18 percent for the same quarter in 2014 and 22 percent in Q4 2014.Radian took some important steps in growth and diversification strategy in the last year, namely the acquisition in June 2014 of Connecticut-based Clayton Holdings, a leading provider of loan due diligence, surveillance, REO management, and consulting services to the mortgage and real estate industries. Clayton’s operations comprise much of Radian’s Mortgage and Real Estate Services Segment. Subsequently, in March 2015, Clayton acquired Utah-based real estate brokerage firm Red Bell Real Estate and its sister company, Main Street Valuations, in order to expand its product offerings in the real estate market.Overall, Radian reported revenues of $290.7 million in Q1, which was a 13 percent increase from the same quarter a year ago ($258.2 million). The company’s net income, however, experienced a 37 percent drop year-over-year in Q1 from $146.0 million ($0.68 per diluted share) down to $91.7 million ($0.39 per diluted share). Radian’s book value per share jumped by 89 percent from $6.10 in Q1 2014 up to $11.53 in Q1 2015. The company’s figures for Q1 last year, which ended March 31, 2014, do not include the company’s acquisition of Clayton Holdings, which was finalized in June 2014.Radian’s total number of delinquent mortgage loans in its portfolio by 24 percent year-over-year in Q1 and by 11 percent from the fourth quarter of 2014. News story: £1 billion housing delivery fund launched by Brokenshire in partnership with Barclays

first_img Homes England has been established to play a more active role in the housing market and do things differently to increase the pace, scale and quality of delivering new homes. The Housing Delivery Fund demonstrates Barclays’ commitment to the residential sector and will provide a new funding stream for SME developers to help progress sites and deliver more affordable homes across England. My priority as Housing Secretary is to get Britain building the homes our country needs.  This new fund – partnering Homes England with Barclays – is a further important step by giving smaller builders access to the finance they need to get housing developments off the ground.  This is a fantastic opportunity to not only get more homes built but also promote new and innovative approaches to construction and design that exist across the housing market. John McFarlane, Barclays’ Chairman, said: Chairman of Homes England, Sir Ed Lister, said: There is a vital need to build more good quality homes across the country.  This £1bn fund is about helping to do exactly that by showing firms in the business of house building that the right finance is available for projects that help meet this urgent need. We are very pleased to be working with government to get the country building more homes, more quickly. Housing Secretary James Brokenshire MP has today announced a new partnership with Barclays Bank to provide £1 billion of loan finance to help support small and medium sized developers, speeding up the delivery of thousands of new homes planned across England.Support, ranging between £5 million to £100 million, will be made available to those developers who are able to demonstrate the necessary experience and commitment to building excellent new homes, whilst boasting a track record of delivering challenging projects on time and to target.Overseen by the Government’s delivery agency Homes England, the funding will put greater emphasis on opening up the housing market, which sees almost two-thirds of new homes built by just ten companies at present. The Housing Delivery Fund will support the delivery of new homes, including social housing, retirement living and apartments for rent, whilst also encouraging greater innovation on how housing is delivered such as brownfield land and urban regeneration projects.Housing Secretary Rt Hon James Brokenshire MP, said: Today’s agreement with Barclays forms part of the Government’s wider commitment to increase the pace of housing delivery in England. Ministers have been clear on their ambition to achieve 300,000 new homes a year by the mid-2020s, which follows 217,000 homes built last year, the biggest increase in housing supply in England for almost a decade.last_img read more

‘Don’t Expect Major New Coal-Fired Plants’ in the U.S.

first_img FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPrint分享E&E News: About 16 percent of the U.S. coal fleet has retired in the past five years, but don’t expect major new coal-fired plants to fill that void. The federal government counts four new coal projects on a list of planned power plants nationwide. Three of those face long odds, and none will be able to replace the millions of tons in lost coal demand resulting from recent retirements, even as the Trump administration has vowed to revive the ailing industry. The developer of a proposed 320-megawatt unit in Wyoming is facing jail time after pleading guilty to stealing government cash. A Kentucky coke plant that would have generated electricity as a byproduct has been scrapped. And a planned $2.1 billion plant in Georgia has idled. The sole U.S. coal facility under construction: a tiny plant being built by the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. The dynamic amounts to an existential crisis for the U.S. coal industry. While coal still accounts for roughly a third of U.S. power generation, the industry is slowly contracting as plants retire and utilities replace them with natural gas and renewables. American Electric Power Co. Inc., one of the country’s largest coal-burning utilities, recently announced plans to build a $4.5 billion wind farm in Oklahoma . PacifiCorp, another coal-centric power company, has similar plans to upgrade its wind fleet while slowly transitioning away from power plants fueled by the black mineral.Utilities entered 2017 with plans to retire 4.5 gigawatts of coal — or 2 percent of 2016 U.S. coal capacity — and add 11 GW of natural gas and 8.5 GW of wind, according to figures from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The trend has prompted a series of rescue efforts. West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice (R) has proposed a $15-per-ton subsidy for utilities burning Appalachian coal In Congress, there is an effort afoot to expand tax credits for power plants that use carbon capture and sequestration (CCS). (Both efforts hint at coal’s long-term challenges and the reason for the dearth of planned coal plants.“There are two big risks for coal generation right now. One is gas prices stuck at low levels for a long time. Second, developers take on a lot of environmental risk in the future,” said Travis Miller, who directs utilities research at Morningstar Inc. “So environmental risk might not be a risk for four years, obviously referring to the presidential administration, or eight years.Full article: Will the U.S. ever build another big coal plant? ‘Don’t Expect Major New Coal-Fired Plants’ in the U.S.last_img read more

Pickles in Key West

first_img ShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr by: Anthony DemangoneA big part of a successful conference is networking. Content is wonderful. But networking can unlock opportunities and solve problems.Want an example?During a meeting here in Key West, someone spoke about how wonderful “great” customer service is when you see it.This led another person at the table to mention “Give’m the pickle.”  She said it was a video that trained people on how to give great customer service. It wasn’t a big room, so a few tables heard the comment about “Give’m the pickle.” Three or four CEOs – people I respect a great deal – said that they were trained using the video or use it at their credit union. continue reading »last_img read more
